The State Border Guard Service is testing the use of advanced technologies that will automate certain processes in the work of border guards.

A Ukrainian company that specialises in the development and implementation of advanced machine vision technologies has developed a software solution for detecting threats at Ukraine's border. The software, which is capable of detecting objects according to specified parameters, is currently being tested at some border areas and facilities of the State Border Guard Service. It is combined with surveillance cameras, including thermal imaging cameras.

Designated officials of the State Border Guard Service are able to monitor the relevant sectors using Zir pro analytics. During the test use, border guards together with the developers train the software algorithm to detect border or regime violators and avoid false alarms.

For example, during one of the recent detentions in Zakarpattia, a thermal imaging camera recorded many wild animals running between the violators and border guards after a warning shot. An algorithm is also being tested that can distinguish an armed person, read a licence plate, determine the type and model of a vehicle, boat or military equipment...

It is expected that the use of machine vision will improve control over the state border and reduce the risk of human error using computer algorithms.

Among other things, machine vision can help monitor the workload of checkpoints, analyse traffic across the border, identify wanted persons and vehicles, and monitor restricted areas. Border guards will also explore the possibility of introducing machine vision technologies in combat operations.

"Our goal is to create a product that not only detects potential threats but also anticipates their development, providing our border guards with the necessary tools to respond effectively. At the same time, understanding the diversity of warfare, we are constantly upgrading the system and introducing new intelligent algorithms that would reduce the human factor and simplify the work of border guards," adds Vitaliy Rozdobutko, Director of Compass Engineering.
